I figured I would give this whole blog thing a shot.... I hope to do an update once a week. Hopefully some folks will enjoy.. Well here goes!...
I have had the pleasure of knowing Amber Dawn for some time now. I used to manage a local music store where she would come and take lessons from Dave Knorr, our guitar instructor. (Dave was also my guitar instructor, which is always relatable to see someone taking the same path I had once walked.) It was always a weekly visit from a smiling young lady who seemed eager to further her knowledge of the guitar. Little did I know that she had an enormous passion for playing the guitar and singing. If you don't know who she is, well.. Just give it some time and you will definitely see her going places! I got an opportunity to sit down with her, snap some photos and talk about her love of music!
During Amber's photo shoot we stopped for a moment to talk about her and music. Being the bright energetic person she is, she was totally on board for some question and answers!...
When talking about why she chose guitar Amber had unique way of looking at it, "I think it kind of chose me more than anything, I don't really remember not playing guitar." Coming from a musical family on both sides, she was influenced by her grandfathers and especially her mother, who also plays the guitar. "and then I just kind of took it on my own.. I've never put down, not for any stretch of time.." she said "And then there was Dave (our beloved guitar instructor) to keep that going to.... for a long time."
Even from a young age Amber was heavily influenced by music. She talked about getting in trouble at pre-school for singing a Lynyrd Skynyrd song during class..." I got sent home, I think.. and then they gave me a lead in the school Christmas play....Haha!" It seems that Amber had music resinating in heart from the start, so I had to ask when was her first official gig.
"My first gig-gig, I was probably like 14-15ish, I was living in Long Beach, MS and my neighbors had a band called the Dancing Peasants and they kind of adopted me and my step-dad.... We all played together and played at the Mocking Bird, in the Bay.." Obviously not being shy at a young age Quickly, Amber could see how performing made other people happy. I think its great that a young performer like Amber was so mature that she could see the effect that she had while performing for people.
There is a long list of musical performers and bands that Amber loves and is influenced by, including: Led Zeppelin, Ani DiFranco, Melissa Etheridge, Indigo Girls, Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, The Beatles....just to name a few. "I pretty much like everything... just anything thats angsty, female, power.. that kind of stuff," said Amber with a cheerful confident smile. "I enjoy getting to... like let a little bit of my angst out and anything that allows me to throw some attitude in it.. Sometimes when I get to yell, thats really fun!"
Amber also enjoys performing in theater and hanging out with family and friends. In telling me this she says, "I don't know, it seems like everything I do still comes full circle with music."
Amber is constantly playing here on the MS Gulf Coast. Every time I take a look at social media, she's posting where you can see her play next. Which always means she is getting re-booked at venues because she is doing an great job at what she loves to do.
"Well, besides the fact that I just don't remember ever not playing music and it would just feel wrong not to.."
I think with that statement Amber is going to be doing this for a long time. If you haven't already gone to see Amber, I hope that you make it out to do so. This charming, witty and talented young lady brings a lot stage and is worth your time to go have a drink and listen to some great music. Amber has also been nominated for the Sun Herald People's Choice Awards 2016. Amber currently plays all over the Gulf Coast, but recently has started hosting an open mic night at Zeppelin's in Biloxi on Wednesday night from 7-11.
